<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm so thrilled to be part of this beautiful exhibition in one of Yorkshire's loveliest towns, Hebden Bridge. <br />
<br />
I created a vintage entomology box of Yorkshire butterflies especially for the show, which I'm excited to say has already found a new home. <br />
<br />
The exhibition runs until August 18th. Heart Gallery <a href="http://heartgallery.co.uk/">http://heartgallery.co.uk/</a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have been very fortunate to have my work for sale at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter for a couple of years. Its very apt as their beautiful butterfly room was one of my inspirations when looking for a new direction in my embroidery. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U67j7HzLGuc/XFHMyra2WBI/AAAAAAAAA2E/XR86geuMjk0_XP-gE7hU0CUB1Hw1ftkFQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_7910.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U67j7HzLGuc/XFHMyra2WBI/AAAAAAAAA2E/XR86geuMjk0_XP-gE7hU0CUB1Hw1ftkFQCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_7910.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You cannot fail to be creatively fuelled when you see such beauty.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The shop at the RAMM is really lovely and better still every purchase helps to fund the museum. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I was thrilled to be asked to create an exclusive butterfly to coincide with the Criminal Ornamentation exhibition this January. This is a touring Arts Council exhibition curated by the artist Yinka Shinobare, exploring decorative art and craft, it brings big names to Exeter, including the work of Alexander McQueen, William Morris and Timorous Beasties. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cPmeE1FIUJQ/XFHMwfdBRxI/AAAAAAAAA10/OQpQullgFFgsFdP0xYEAJ-gSZJgH1FlywCEwYBhgL/s1600/9781853323607-244x355.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="355" data-original-width="244" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cPmeE1FIUJQ/XFHMwfdBRxI/AAAAAAAAA10/OQpQullgFFgsFdP0xYEAJ-gSZJgH1FlywCEwYBhgL/s320/9781853323607-244x355.jpg" width="219" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My first stop was the online collection where I was drawn to the splendour of the Queen Alexander's Birdwing butterfly. Found in Papua new Guinea, though extremely endangered, the female is the world's largest butterfly with a wingspan of up to 30cm. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-K0MW76RnuPc/XFHMzf3Vr2I/AAAAAAAAA2E/DHVapPVN82AYF6wIRoyXV4whcYdr6tKGgCEwYBhgL/s1600/img.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="399" data-original-width="600" height="212" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-K0MW76RnuPc/XFHMzf3Vr2I/AAAAAAAAA2E/DHVapPVN82AYF6wIRoyXV4whcYdr6tKGgCEwYBhgL/s320/img.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So using various source photographs I first sketched out my design, this helps me to select the colours of silk and thread. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zJAZfT4BViw/XFHMy8dcOMI/AAAAAAAAA2A/kuIP0AjBn4gdk2Z3C8Zg-q7sOR-IzzU5QCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_8910.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zJAZfT4BViw/XFHMy8dcOMI/AAAAAAAAA2A/kuIP0AjBn4gdk2Z3C8Zg-q7sOR-IzzU5QCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_8910.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The drawing is then used as a pattern, there are four layers of silk in each wing which are stitched to reveal the colours underneath. A final layer of shot organza is placed over the whole piece, I stitch again and then I cut away small areas before stitching again. The final stage is hand beading and adding tiny sequins to catch the light. The body of the butterfly is wet felted and then stitched into. <br />
<br />
I have created a large wall piece and a smaller wearable version. <br />

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">As January dawns</span> I always find myself looking back at the year gone by, reflecting on the highs and lows and planning for the next 12 months.<br />
<br />
For the purpose of this blog it will definitely be highs and I'm so lucky that their have been many. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FhwPaG0x6bs/XDsG0vO9wGI/AAAAAAAAA1M/jjkG5_uEEYgmFsE7m7PFH3CNZryUDeWZACEwYBhgL/s1600/WORKBOX_COVER_169_small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1526" data-original-width="1100" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FhwPaG0x6bs/XDsG0vO9wGI/AAAAAAAAA1M/jjkG5_uEEYgmFsE7m7PFH3CNZryUDeWZACEwYBhgL/s320/WORKBOX_COVER_169_small.jpg" width="230" /></a></div>
I've had my work featured in some lovely magazines including this one, <a href="https://www.creativewithworkbox.com/">Be Creative</a>, its a really beautiful publication and seems to be going from strength to strength. <br />
<br />
I was fortunate to exhibit my work at Made in Cheltenham and it was here I met Andy Poplar from <a href="http://www.vinegarandbrownpaper.co.uk/">Vinegar and Brown Paper</a>. This sparked an idea for a collaboration and one of my favourite ever pieces was the result. It sold very quickly. I do hope we can do more. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R9PaFPSyXhM/XDsHA-eVwZI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/yCVwJKrZbO4TzJI67G11NZvn0Nj1GITZwCEwYBhgL/s1600/andy%2Bp%2Bbox2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R9PaFPSyXhM/XDsHA-eVwZI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/yCVwJKrZbO4TzJI67G11NZvn0Nj1GITZwCEwYBhgL/s320/andy%2Bp%2Bbox2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
New work was a theme for last year too, I created new pieces for an exhibition at <a href="http://www.unittwelve.co.uk/">Unit Twelve</a> in Staffordshire. Based on a kitchen garden theme these were embroidered seed packets with visiting creatures. I will be back to this lovely venue in August to teach some workshops. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FlvAqseOtGU/XDsG5NmbqtI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/FNjprzQXeCMTPschTJw97ir7B8oCw10IgCEwYBhgL/s1600/Pansy%2BSeed%2Bpacket.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1310" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FlvAqseOtGU/XDsG5NmbqtI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/FNjprzQXeCMTPschTJw97ir7B8oCw10IgCEwYBhgL/s320/Pansy%2BSeed%2Bpacket.JPEG" width="261" /></a></div>
<br />
In October I was delighted to be accepted as a member of the <a href="https://www.societyforembroideredwork.com/">Society for Embroidered Work</a> this organisation promotes embroidery as an art form. Take a look at their website, so inspiring.<br />

The year ended with another order from Liberty London, my husband and I delivered in person and enjoyed a smashing day taking in the Christmas atmosphere. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-16yBAAzmfFU/XDsG71ps-OI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/QTykSaTbV9k0QbmZ9BUZ26SQnkq5dkMQgCEwYBhgL/s1600/Liberty%2BButterflies.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-16yBAAzmfFU/XDsG71ps-OI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/QTykSaTbV9k0QbmZ9BUZ26SQnkq5dkMQgCEwYBhgL/s320/Liberty%2BButterflies.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
2019 will bring lots of workshops and an exciting collaborative launch, please <a href="https://heatheremb.us13.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=bbc76023375996925144b6633&id=ae1886126a">sign up to my newsletter</a> to get all my latest offers and events. Out and about and fairs and events I'm often asked about commissioning work, the options, the process the costs involved etc.<br />
I've been very fortunate to have made work for some lovely occasions; weddings, Christenings, special birthdays and a house warming. <br />
The wonderful thing about butterflies is that to many people they have sentimental meaning and they can also be attached to specific locations. They are a symbol of the fragility of life, rebirth and remembrance. <br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fgBXbX_9v3c/WzdNfgSMfAI/AAAAAAAAAzM/0LE_rrwO8FoDqlY-8Y5M25ZoQHb0uwWsACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_9231.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fgBXbX_9v3c/WzdNfgSMfAI/AAAAAAAAAzM/0LE_rrwO8FoDqlY-8Y5M25ZoQHb0uwWsACLcBGAs/s400/IMG_9231.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Any bespoke piece starts with a conversation about the intended recipient, do they have a favourite butterfly or is this to be location based ? I then start to research species and their specific habitats. Some customers want the butterflies to have this level of accuracy, others just love a particular butterfly. <br />
There are lots of discussions at this stage, I may send you photos or sketches of ideas to choose from. With location specific commissions, where I mount butterflies on their map locations, I may need your postcode to find the appropriate vintage Ordnance Survey map.</td></tr>

Any size of piece is possible from a 25cm frame to 50cm and everywhere in between and beyond. <br />
<br />
As well as vintage map backgrounds, butterflies can be mounted on original artwork. I always add an embroidered linen label with the species Latin name. There is an artist label on the reverse of the work which has an individual serial number. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Hello everyone, I thought it might be a good idea to show you the processes that go into one of my pieces. One of the questions I get asked most when I'm out and about with my hatchlings is 'how long do they take ?' </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">So here goes..... Making a Liberty Swallowtail. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Each butterfly begins with a drawing, either from a specimen, book illustration, photograph or a combination of all three. I create a line drawing which simplifies the wing patterns .</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--SF_BXd8uQY/Wux0xNNMufI/AAAAAAAAAyI/7Mf0ddmhwV8QcSzav9-j8PTMkgPpLbZ_ACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_9621%2B%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--SF_BXd8uQY/Wux0xNNMufI/AAAAAAAAAyI/7Mf0ddmhwV8QcSzav9-j8PTMkgPpLbZ_ACEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_9621%2B%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The next stage is to break the patterns down into colour layers, these can be any number but usually about three or four. These are then traced onto bondaweb. I then select the fabrics that best match the colours of the particular species. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3nL5axI_pnY/Wux0xOF80AI/AAAAAAAAAyM/bSUjSzjkDN4Ruis-DlGLq4saGWv25bhJgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_9620.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3nL5axI_pnY/Wux0xOF80AI/AAAAAAAAAyM/bSUjSzjkDN4Ruis-DlGLq4saGWv25bhJgCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_9620.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Each of these layers are then applied to individual fabrics and cut out. I use a very sharp pair of scissors. On the Swallowtail the black layer is fairly complex, this can take well over an hour. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">The layers are then fused together and placed on a background of silk with another one of interfacing. This creates a stable base for embroidery. </span><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-spK1WR68lu8/Wux0yGgrdlI/AAAAAAAAAyY/hbw4_9dJbqoJY6POM7oCB1ktxgYqf4J_ACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_9625.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-spK1WR68lu8/Wux0yGgrdlI/AAAAAAAAAyY/hbw4_9dJbqoJY6POM7oCB1ktxgYqf4J_ACEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_9625.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I can then begin to stitch, looking very closely at my original source material, I satin stitch the edges of each wing part. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Next I cover each piece with a voile or organza and stitch the veins on the wings. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Using my very sharp scissors I then cut away parts of this layer to reveal what's underneath. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IZ9Yjf1GvHQ/Wux0y64NRJI/AAAAAAAAAyY/_ouRS9OgXncr4AydCs8p44Gr3DmvY_kjACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_9628.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IZ9Yjf1GvHQ/Wux0y64NRJI/AAAAAAAAAyY/_ouRS9OgXncr4AydCs8p44Gr3DmvY_kjACEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_9628.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This creates iridescence and depth.</span> </span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k0v6R74vzWM/Wux0zPAM-UI/AAAAAAAAAyY/iF_W3vWMqJkxG5gsYzFlAKKaL3xLKjIjwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_9629.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k0v6R74vzWM/Wux0zPAM-UI/AAAAAAAAAyY/iF_W3vWMqJkxG5gsYzFlAKKaL3xLKjIjwCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_9629.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I then apply more free motion embroidery to add interest, it's this stage where the piece can come to life. The separate wings are stitched together to complete the butterfly's shape. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Hand stitching tiny beads and sequins adds texture. I then felt a body from pure wool, referring to photos, sewing bead eyes and antennae of hemp string. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">And he's finished. </span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zx-pWP1MjH4/Wux0zagmf9I/AAAAAAAAAyU/99n61tQxI1Q_h5Mp2qofEAYtZqXY3SXzQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_9630.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zx-pWP1MjH4/Wux0zagmf9I/AAAAAAAAAyU/99n61tQxI1Q_h5Mp2qofEAYtZqXY3SXzQCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_9630.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">To answer that familiar question, about three and a half hours, without the sketching stage. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"> </span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It has taken me a little while to write about being part of the new show Made By Hand Cheltenham, organised by the brilliant team behind The Contemporary Craft Festival </span><a href="http://www.madebyhandengland.org.uk/"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">http://www.madebyhandengland.org.uk/</span></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Helped by my lovely husband, we had quite a stressful journey to Cheltenham, the weather was awful and there was an accident on the M5. But the stress disappeared as we were greeted and directed to our pre-timed unloading spot. there were even porters to help carry in boxes. We unloaded, and armed with a drill we set about assembling the display. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">A really welcoming cup of tea and friendly neighbours meant that set up was done by about 7pm. I resisted further tweaking. So onward to our Purple Palace, what my hubby calls the Premier Inn. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The next day after a good night's sleep and a lovely breakfast, I walked down to the town hall. Last night I hadn't realised how beautiful the building was and the work on display, just amazing. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It was a fabulous two days, with brilliant fellow makers, customers and visitors. <br />
<br />
I was also thrilled to be featured in a lovely interiors blog called Home Relish <br />
<a href="https://homerelish.com/our-highlights-from-the-made-by-hand-fair-cheltenham-2018/">https://homerelish.com/our-highlights-from-the-made-by-hand-fair-cheltenham-2018/</a><br />
Use the link to pop over and see more fantastic images from the event. <br />
<br />
We also came home with a new member of the family, thanks to the superb Fauxdermy <a href="https://fauxidermy.co.uk/">https://fauxidermy.co.uk/</a><br />
Meet Hartley, who will always remind us of a brilliant event.<br />

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Well
another fantastic day, even though it had a very early start, up at 5am and then a drive to
Tiverton Parkway, my train was delayed so this added another forty minutes onto
my journey. Frustrating but not the end of the world. </span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I
arrived at Oxford Circus and made by way to the Argyle Street exit, I love
ascending the steep steps and seeing beautiful Liberty ahead of me. I never
fail to have a flutter in my stomach at the sight of the gorgeous facade.
Making my way round the back to Little Marlborough street , the less glamorous
side of the building. I had a delivery to make, a new collection of bees and
ladybirds. Safely handed over to a gentleman who seemed slightly bemused by my
concern over the box and it’s contents. Maybe telling him they were like my
children was rather extreme. </span></span></div>

2017 was a fantastic year for me and it started in January with a meeting at Liberty, London. Following on from a chance meeting with a very lovely lady at a craft fair in Chagford, I had a chance to show my work to the home buyer. And so began the most wonderful opportunity in my creative career, I've written previously about my long standing love of Liberty and I cannot over emphasis it is a dream come true. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Seeing my work in the store moved me to tears on more than one occasion last year, I'm thrilled to say I'm working on a new collection from them, due to be delivered in early February. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-641vlvK08dg/WQyej6vQKfI/AAAAAAAAArg/pSNVEqOb8IMtR4hSpClvEucyv2vQZ9B3gCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_7749.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-641vlvK08dg/WQyej6vQKfI/AAAAAAAAArg/pSNVEqOb8IMtR4hSpClvEucyv2vQZ9B3gCPcBGAYYCw/s320/IMG_7749.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Other highlights this year were exhibiting at The Contemporary Craft Festival in June, being a guest maker at The Devon Guild and being selected to have my work on the gorgeous Made By Hand Online. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R29MaPAMwTk/WTFZKeQy9DI/AAAAAAAAAsE/YO40kjIqhKwc8spdcf8OXpI46jAL4oNPACPcBGAYYCw/s1600/madebyhandonline.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="171" data-original-width="1600" height="34" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R29MaPAMwTk/WTFZKeQy9DI/AAAAAAAAAsE/YO40kjIqhKwc8spdcf8OXpI46jAL4oNPACPcBGAYYCw/s320/madebyhandonline.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I also had the privilege of exhibit at Cowslip Workshops for both their summer and Christmas Fairs. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IRKs8G22FDs/U0AyDDhygTI/AAAAAAAAANI/JVOMdb0_RN0R8oBHREu5uKPKXjJOIdA3gCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_1172.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1196" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IRKs8G22FDs/U0AyDDhygTI/AAAAAAAAANI/JVOMdb0_RN0R8oBHREu5uKPKXjJOIdA3gCPcBGAYYCw/s320/IMG_1172.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
My banner making continues to go hand in hand with the butterflies and bugs, I have some very exciting commissions to fulfil this year. <br />
I am so lucky to do something I love everyday, its has been especially important as I also undertook a new role as a carer for my Mum. The saying 'a needle and thread mends the head' couldn't be more true as I learn to deal with her vascular dementia, my creativity provides me with a constant in the more difficult periods. <br />
Thank you for being with me on this stitchy journey and I'm so looking forward to sharing what 2018 will bring. <br />

<br />
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I’m so sorry it’s taken me so long to write down my
thoughts about my recent trip to Liberty.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ah0QML93H88/WgGaCgn9zcI/AAAAAAAAAt4/FSefzaCFihIjwZ0RJBM_ZFxkyf60L-uMwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_7952.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ah0QML93H88/WgGaCgn9zcI/AAAAAAAAAt4/FSefzaCFihIjwZ0RJBM_ZFxkyf60L-uMwCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_7952.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><o:p></o:p></span> </div>
<br />
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">It all started with an email a few weeks ago asking me if
I’d be interested in giving a demonstration in the beautiful haberdashery
department. About twice a year, I think, the store hosts a Lotto evening with
entertainment throughout the store and a chance to win discounts on purchases
through a scratch card system.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">After thinking for all of three seconds, I booked my
train and accepted the invitation. For those of you who have read my blog
before you know my love of Liberty and that having my work in the store is the
greatest achievement in my embroidery career. So actually stitching within those
beautiful walls was yet another dream come true.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I decided to work on a Purple Emperor butterfly, in
iconic Tana lawn prints, purple is also such a Liberty colour.</span></div>
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><o:p></o:p></span> </div>
<br />
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Along with the butterfly I took my threads, beads and
needle felting equipment, sketchbooks and patterns so people could see my
processes.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The day dawned and I made my way to the station, I was
fortunate that my hubby had work in the city on the same day so he came
with me. It was just as well as I was also delivering a new order to the store,
comprising of seven framed pieces, so the help was greatly appreciated.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
As I entered the store I noticed a board with all the
details of the day’s events, my name was on it. I was so thrilled.</div>
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></div>
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
The staff in the haberdashery are so lovely, especially
Rachel who went out of her way to make me feel welcome. I was there with Alice
Garrett of Alice Caroline and Petra Boase. We set up and got chatting, only to
discover that Petra and I did the same degree course in Manchester, one year
apart. It was brilliant reminiscing and made the evening just speed by.</div>

I had to get to grips with a Janome machine, we
eventually made friends though I won’t be swapping my Bernina. It was so nice to chat with customers and explain the process of making the butterflies. </div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The evening went really quickly, the store was buzzing
with customers, live music and flowing Prosecco. I had a surprise visit from
one of my dearest friends too, so that made it special. Having Richard, my

such a lovely experience, with some retail therapy thrown in, and the chance to
see behind the scenes, I will never forget it.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

What an inspiration, the island is so rich in flora that at every turn you see colourful bursts of beauty. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fLwT5LhgbpA/WcFah0t-fmI/AAAAAAAAAtU/awrqqLGBlbsFNoyipPxp2SYSNydleGVrwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_8025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fLwT5LhgbpA/WcFah0t-fmI/AAAAAAAAAtU/awrqqLGBlbsFNoyipPxp2SYSNydleGVrwCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_8025.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Bird of Paradise flowers are so abundant they almost become mainstream and banks of blue Agapanthus line the roads. <br />
Madeira belongs to Portugal but has strong ties with the UK so there's an influence of English style in the formal gardens. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-91K5zoAovB8/WcFaoeQQ07I/AAAAAAAAAto/dkjIwVPGCeQvDhC5Z8APjlmFYmnJ8cs4wCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_8033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-91K5zoAovB8/WcFaoeQQ07I/AAAAAAAAAto/dkjIwVPGCeQvDhC5Z8APjlmFYmnJ8cs4wCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_8033.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I spotted my first ever Monarch butterfly in the centre of Funchal, the capital, they are so big and quite difficult to photograph. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JBkKTke0MGA/WcFa0nNdjyI/AAAAAAAAAto/4SdLwrD-_SY6gR-XU-Dt4FqAn_A7NhZwQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_8056.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JBkKTke0MGA/WcFa0nNdjyI/AAAAAAAAAto/4SdLwrD-_SY6gR-XU-Dt4FqAn_A7NhZwQCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_8056.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Madeira has a fairly mountainous terrain and some lovely steep hills to conquer. The landscape is dotted with 'levadas' irrigation channels which are now popular walks. Some are fairly gentle and shady whereas others are craggy and precipitous. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vNw0zVVgFeY/WcFamxvtAeI/AAAAAAAAAto/2GGlknJH6OYwmF-suA1acJhwkX85KvLCwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_8052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vNw0zVVgFeY/WcFamxvtAeI/AAAAAAAAAto/2GGlknJH6OYwmF-suA1acJhwkX85KvLCwCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_8052.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This beautiful Madeiran Spotted Wood was nestling on an Agapanthus leaf , found during our levada walk in Paradise Valley. <br />
As you climb higher the landscape changes and becomes less verdant but very dramatic. Here we are at 1,000 metres overlooking the Nuns' Valley. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_hqBteLMz8/WcFazr7ai4I/AAAAAAAAAto/EsscXi-K53IHGuZlAOYaDN_XZACgqqjpQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_8062.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_hqBteLMz8/WcFazr7ai4I/AAAAAAAAAto/EsscXi-K53IHGuZlAOYaDN_XZACgqqjpQCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_8062.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The air scented with Eucalyptus and Pine trees. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We walked with a local guide who was so informative about the plants and their uses, pointing out Poinsettias, Hollyhocks, Dragon Trees.........</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the end of the walk he presented me with a little selection of bulbs and seeds,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
'The British brought a lot of plants to my island, now you can take some back!'</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I will always have a small piece of Madeira in my garden. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In my next blog I'll show you the beautiful embroidery I discovered on my travels. </div>

As you may know from my previous posts the greatest thing that has ever happened to me, creatively, happened this year. My work is for sale in Liberty of London. If you read my blog you will know that my love of all things Liberty began at the age of 7. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-S3FyttrP60U/WZFyuegqqMI/AAAAAAAAAsw/ZVoMwNB_G7gExS58_O15qskRQgq_yd2hACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_7952.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-S3FyttrP60U/WZFyuegqqMI/AAAAAAAAAsw/ZVoMwNB_G7gExS58_O15qskRQgq_yd2hACEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_7952.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Well at the end of last month I finally got to see them in the 'flesh' or should that be fabric, in their new home. Lovely friends beat me to it and sent me pictures of them, but nothing could compare to the feeling of seeing them myself. <br />
<br />
It started with this sign, proclaiming the new Haberdashery, its wonderful to see a department like this developing. I remember seeing the outrage on social media when John Lewis threatened that their habby would be going. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s3SMjaJv_Dg/WZFzGePi71I/AAAAAAAAAs8/MyOvd5C9SPkvhdfJZwZk_RZqbpd3-Tv_gCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_7959.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s3SMjaJv_Dg/WZFzGePi71I/AAAAAAAAAs8/MyOvd5C9SPkvhdfJZwZk_RZqbpd3-Tv_gCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_7959.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I felt like a child creeping downstairs on Christmas morning to unwrap their presents, except in reverse as I ascended the amazing wooden staircase towards the third floor. My heart was beating so fast and the emotion rising as I got nearer. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IBYYKFoh-Yg/WZFyeJwK0AI/AAAAAAAAAs8/mtk0uXlga2sI7RnAWTI7VlIhOrptv-ZzQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_7938.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IBYYKFoh-Yg/WZFyeJwK0AI/AAAAAAAAAs8/mtk0uXlga2sI7RnAWTI7VlIhOrptv-ZzQCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_7938.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I walked through the door and there they were, sitting against a pale grey wall. It was so difficult to take it all in. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tPQHNi2VGls/WZF1mkbfs_I/AAAAAAAAAtE/9s7afFX6ZNcdV-7V7phxmfG8YOdcPsfCgCLcBGAs/s1600/20106839_1573759965988641_975634206642182526_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tPQHNi2VGls/WZF1mkbfs_I/AAAAAAAAAtE/9s7afFX6ZNcdV-7V7phxmfG8YOdcPsfCgCLcBGAs/s320/20106839_1573759965988641_975634206642182526_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XcV6kLmq4_I/WZFyhYoxfzI/AAAAAAAAAs8/BRu6CRRS60AEB9AnrE6_UM4S4XAwTbdEgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_7940.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XcV6kLmq4_I/WZFyhYoxfzI/AAAAAAAAAs8/BRu6CRRS60AEB9AnrE6_UM4S4XAwTbdEgCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_7940.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Inevitably, I burst into tears and my lovely hubby took a picture !<br />
<br />
The haberdashery is glorious, with wonderful vintage tables displaying beautiful notions and materials. There are also work tables, the walls are lined with inspirational mood boards too. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JZvW45J5tLM/WZFyyCzdHYI/AAAAAAAAAs8/yp3ZHZP3PKYMICaCpYfUh9_1wnNsDA7xgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_7970.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JZvW45J5tLM/WZFyyCzdHYI/AAAAAAAAAs8/yp3ZHZP3PKYMICaCpYfUh9_1wnNsDA7xgCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_7970.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I would highly recommend a visit, there is so much to see and I bet you won't be able to leave empty handed. </div>

<br />
Firstly, I am delighted to say that my work is now part of the beautiful website <br />
<a href="https://madebyhandonline.com/">https://madebyhandonline.com/</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R29MaPAMwTk/WTFZKeQy9DI/AAAAAAAAArs/7MD54j_3MCgTraC3-b4aKL0FE5Ck6yJNwCEw/s1600/madebyhandonline.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="171" data-original-width="1600" height="34" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R29MaPAMwTk/WTFZKeQy9DI/AAAAAAAAArs/7MD54j_3MCgTraC3-b4aKL0FE5Ck6yJNwCEw/s320/madebyhandonline.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It is a celebration of everything handmade and you can easily lose an hour or too looking at the beautiful creations available. My butterflies are fluttering their way onto the site.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d_sMXmFbYUM/WTFZQaNngvI/AAAAAAAAArw/W-oYi_e47NgNFNoRvF5zGLrsOG1a5gA1wCEw/s1600/IMG_8349.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d_sMXmFbYUM/WTFZQaNngvI/AAAAAAAAArw/W-oYi_e47NgNFNoRvF5zGLrsOG1a5gA1wCEw/s320/IMG_8349.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The team, headed by Katie, are just fabulous and you really feel their passion for hand made and supporting makers. <br />

<br />
A couple of weeks ago I had a phone call from the lovely Sarah James, of The Contemporary Craft Festival at Bovey Tracey, offering me a last minute place at the event. I had been on the reserve list, I had a little think and then realised I couldn't let this amazing opportunity go. So since then I've been stitching non-stop. I realised I'd got to a slight obsessional level when my husband said he wished he was a moth !<br />
<a href="http://www.craftsatboveytracey.co.uk/">http://www.craftsatboveytracey.co.uk/</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cksU_hk4xEw/WTFaPSjIQJI/AAAAAAAAAr4/OFmuvCPijPYVWhDu34wvB64kzQ0xf_fJACEw/s1600/contemporary-craft-festival.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="101" data-original-width="513" height="63" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cksU_hk4xEw/WTFaPSjIQJI/AAAAAAAAAr4/OFmuvCPijPYVWhDu34wvB64kzQ0xf_fJACEw/s320/contemporary-craft-festival.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0EJ-q5MMixM/WQye5THJ8_I/AAAAAAAAArY/Js8BFcy9F9UyHsZWh1_TsgvG9vQYVeZTACEw/s1600/untitled.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="166" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0EJ-q5MMixM/WQye5THJ8_I/AAAAAAAAArY/Js8BFcy9F9UyHsZWh1_TsgvG9vQYVeZTACEw/s320/untitled.png" width="320" /></a></div>
I was looking for a way to display my butterflies that was a little bit different to usual framing. The vintage entomology displays in places like the Natural History Museum have always fascinated me, even though the rows and rows of impaled insects are rather unsettling. Obviously most of these collections were sourced in less enlightened days, when conservation wasn't on the radar. Today's specimens are, on the whole, from sustainable stock. <br />
<a href="http://www.nhm.ac.uk/">http://www.nhm.ac.uk/</a><br />
<br />
Well mine definitely are, a new version of taxidermy; I've heard it called Fauxdermy or very creatively Craftydermy. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NyJ2DQ5oKYY/WQye5QioBaI/AAAAAAAAArg/k33T-F3oIk88NDs1IRwZTzjDGJSGdAxqACEw/s1600/IMG_8336.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NyJ2DQ5oKYY/WQye5QioBaI/AAAAAAAAArg/k33T-F3oIk88NDs1IRwZTzjDGJSGdAxqACEw/s320/IMG_8336.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I began to look at specialist suppliers and found a great variety of options, though none of them quite fitted the bill. Then late one evening I decided to pop 'entomology boxes' into a search on a well known internet site and up came 'Antique Butterfly Drawers used at the Natural History Museum to house Rothschild collection of British Butterflies'. I was amazed and thrilled to find out that every so often the museum sells of some of its older display pieces, these were perfect. <br />
<br />
My finger hovered over the quantity button and there were 25 available.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H3ea0wEB87I/WQyfLQhJtAI/AAAAAAAAArg/JmCLBSb6gzobcLYaacdL48INDX9F5licgCEw/s1600/Heather%2BEveritt%2BVintage%2Bbox%2Bcollection.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H3ea0wEB87I/WQyfLQhJtAI/AAAAAAAAArg/JmCLBSb6gzobcLYaacdL48INDX9F5licgCEw/s320/Heather%2BEveritt%2BVintage%2Bbox%2Bcollection.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I bought the lot and was thrilled when they arrived. They have so much character, some have labels or handwritten notes on the drawer face. I cleaned the glass, so beautiful with tiny bubbles showing how old it is, and waxed the wooden edges and lid. They also have a distinctive smell of moth balls when you lift the lid, reminding me of my Gran's wardrobe. <br />
They are perfect and set off my work beautifully, I add vintage maps depicting the habitat of the specimens and small stitched labels with their Latin name. <br />

<br />
<br />
2017 has got off to a very exciting start, in fact probably the most exciting thing that has ever happened in my creative life.<br />
<br />
It all began on a Saturday December at a craft fair in Chagford, Devon. It had been a really great day, it was an incredibly busy I was feeling very positive about my work and the way ideas had been developing. Then in came a lady busting with positive energy, I hadn't met her before in person but I had received a lovely email from her after she read my blog on my love for Liberty fabrics and how I used them in my work. <br />
<br />
Her name is Linda Bassett, her Instagram handle is Liberty Lindy Lou <a href="https://www.instagram.com/libertylindylou/?hl=en">https://www.instagram.com/libertylindylou/?hl=en</a><br />
She is incredibly passionate about all things Liberty and stitch related. Her feed is very inspirational and well worth a look. Linda developed a great relationship with Ed Burstall the American MD of the store, and continued to have strong connections with the buying team after he left.<br />
<br />
We managed to have a lovely conversation, over my stall in between customers. Linda took a few photos and said she would send them to Liberty. I was thrilled but at the same time I didn't dare believe that anything would happen. <br />
<br />
I have loved the Liberty brand ever since visiting for the first time with my Mum at the age of 7. I clearly remember the beautiful wooden staircases, the amazing colourful scarves and the sense of history that seemed to ooze from the walls. Mum bought me a lovely gold box containing a foam bath oil and soap, but the best thing was the black and white picture of the store on the lid.<br />
Today it is full of tiny scraps of Liberty fabric. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h-MACbZAhhg/WNkutivAw0I/AAAAAAAAAqc/-0R9_XXgmyg35int1l1MhiSXknXn2hPdQCEw/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h-MACbZAhhg/WNkutivAw0I/AAAAAAAAAqc/-0R9_XXgmyg35int1l1MhiSXknXn2hPdQCEw/s200/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="182" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My Liberty box</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My passion continued as a student when I became a regular visitor to the Manchester branch of the store, especially at sale time. <br />
I had also, a few years ago, taken my wearable butterflies to the Open Call at the store, a fantastic and positive experience. The process was filmed for the Channel 4 documentary but unfortunately I ended up on the cutting room floor. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-12ETq7N9Gmw/WNkt83Bi10I/AAAAAAAAAqU/iK6Wtl1zDyQlQprw283SU8j0ge3XdD87ACEw/s1600/Heatheremb%2Bpeacock%2Bcollection.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-12ETq7N9Gmw/WNkt83Bi10I/AAAAAAAAAqU/iK6Wtl1zDyQlQprw283SU8j0ge3XdD87ACEw/s320/Heatheremb%2Bpeacock%2Bcollection.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Three Liberty Peacocks</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So I continued to work with these beautiful fabrics and decided to work on a bigger scale and create British butterflies and moths. <br />
Anyway back to this December, the day after the Chagford Fair an email arrived from Liberty, asking me for details about my butterflies. I think I almost stopped breathing I was just so determined to get this right. A week of emails between myself and Julie Hassan, the senior buyer for home, led to an appointment to go to London to take samples. <br />
I had about three weeks to make new pieces and prepare myself, all the time pinching myself that this was really happening. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hGeMMx_ttzk/WNku2xSV2PI/AAAAAAAAAqo/n_54cMUD9iclCYLEZ1o1Pkws1ZMydQUawCEw/s1600/IMG_7651.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wSqe78nE1-E/WNkusBCp7EI/AAAAAAAAAqo/GDngkuMNFCsWObMLW7npQhTf8zGL789MQCEw/s1600/IMG_7648.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wSqe78nE1-E/WNkusBCp7EI/AAAAAAAAAqo/GDngkuMNFCsWObMLW7npQhTf8zGL789MQCEw/s320/IMG_7648.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The day arrived, I had planned it down to the finest detail train times, parking, tube routes nothing left to chance. As you might expect I was incredibly nervous, I had a little time to kill when I arrived in Regent's Street so I lapped the store and found a little café for a cup of chamomile tea. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hGeMMx_ttzk/WNku2xSV2PI/AAAAAAAAAqo/n_54cMUD9iclCYLEZ1o1Pkws1ZMydQUawCEw/s1600/IMG_7651.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hGeMMx_ttzk/WNku2xSV2PI/AAAAAAAAAqo/n_54cMUD9iclCYLEZ1o1Pkws1ZMydQUawCEw/s1600/IMG_7651.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f8CyDCauHYg/WNk2eZTqL1I/AAAAAAAAAq0/mQX3_kU7HsU1u2NYBMSNqX2OT8seDojRACLcB/s1600/IMG_8004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f8CyDCauHYg/WNk2eZTqL1I/AAAAAAAAAq0/mQX3_kU7HsU1u2NYBMSNqX2OT8seDojRACLcB/s320/IMG_8004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="200" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--_SLL8sSL6E/WNku7l6nWdI/AAAAAAAAAqo/mBIWuLlTrewjpl5-091eapqwRstb0DVWwCEw/s200/Wearable%2BPeacock%2Band%2BPurple%2BEmperor%2B12cm.JPG" width="200" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After entering the Liberty office building I waited a few minutes and was called to take the lift to the third floor. Here I was met by Julie, she put me at ease straight away. She was so easy to talk to and very encouraging, her buying experience meant she knew exactly what would work and how the pieces would be presented. I think I was maybe there for about 45 minutes and then emerged onto Kingly Street, excited and emotional. I rang my sister and we both burst into tears.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A dream come true is an understatement, my work will be stocked by Liberty of London! I owe so much to Linda and I cannot thank her enough. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will write about the new pieces I created for my first order in my next blog! </div>

Get crafty. Hello everyone, I've been mapping out my new year and thought I'd let you know about the workshops I have planned for 2017.<br />
I have some lovely new venues and a combination of hand and machine stitching.<br />
Workshops are great fun and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to teach some fantastic talented students, who very often inspire me. <br />
My first career was as a Primary school teacher so I love the process of presenting a group with the same project and seeing all the different ways it can be interpreted. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MA3w_MmrNns/WKCSB_vCnSI/AAAAAAAAAok/ERjoBRJzwssUyJKQxN-X-tFAIQMzgm2UACEw/s1600/IMG_7649.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My first workshop is on Saturday 25th March at The Magpies Nest, Bideford. This is hand stitching on silk applique creating this cute Blue Tit in a hoop. More details <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheMagpiesNestBideford/?fref=ts">https://www.facebook.com/TheMagpiesNestBideford/?fref=ts</a><br />

Next I'm back at the fantastic Make at Monteray. 25th April.<br />
This is a machine applique and embroidery workshop, the idea being to learn new techniques and gain confidence with your machine. You will produce a lovely butterfly cushion in your choice of colours. <br />

In May 20th, I'm back with the members of Exeter's Embroiderer's Guild, this time with a landscape workshop. As an added bonus we will be joined by members of the Young Embroiderer's Guild, which will be great. https://exeterembroiderersguild.org/<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I thought I'd take a few moments to reflect and look forward to 2017. <br />
<br />
Here are my highlights.<br />
<br />
I started teaching workshops for the fantastic Make at Monteray <a href="http://www.make-at-monteray.co.uk/">http://www.make-at-monteray.co.uk/</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This helped me to organise my thoughts and push myself in a new direction. I also launched my newsletter. <a href="http://heatheremb.us13.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=bbc76023375996925144b6633&id=0b3efe2e31">http://heatheremb.us13.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=bbc76023375996925144b6633&id=0b3efe2e31</a></div>

My husband and I had a fantastic, inspiring holiday to China and Japan. This was to celebrate a milestone birthday. In my personal life I took on a new role as a carer and had to learn to balance this with work. It's made me more determined to create as I now realise what a vital part of my life it is.<br />
<br />
So thank you to everyone who supports me, by reading my blog, liking my posts, retweeting my tweets, buying my work and listening to my insecurities. Here's hoping for a kinder 2017.<br />
<br />
Happy New Year ! <br />
<br />
I have brand, new workshops coming for 2017 including this one at Make at Monteray <a href="http://www.make-at-monteray.co.uk/events/craft-workshop/machine-applique-butterfly-cushion-with-heather-everitt.html">http://www.make-at-monteray.co.uk/events/craft-workshop/machine-applique-butterfly-cushion-with-heather-everitt.html</a><br />

My hubby and I both celebrated a milestone birthday this year and our 15 year wedding anniversary, so instead of a party we decided to treat ourselves to a fantastic holiday. It has taken me a little while to digest the trip and also other life events have got in the way, but here we go. <br />
<br />
We started in China, Richard's choice, and then spent 9 days in Japan. It has always been a dream of mine to visit, I love Japanese art and design, I'm also attracted to the ethos and approach to life of the people.<br />
I was not disappointed, everything was so efficient and well thought out. Arriving at Tokyo Station one of the biggest in the world was amazing, despite thousands of people there was no aggression, no litter and no threat, unlike the feelings I get when I travel to London. <br />
Even the pavements were beautiful each district having its own emblem on occasional stones.<br />
<br />
I felt at home almost immediately, and oh so much to see. Tokyo is not a walkable city, it is vast and each area has its own characteristics some ultra modern, others traditional. Fantastic shop displays, eccentric cafes and sublime temples to name a few. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hloelcGz9i4/WB9cAE6D6II/AAAAAAAAAnY/vnC_rp9Ujh4PuLW4uHQZHqq8hNn-efhqACEw/s1600/IMG_7428.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hloelcGz9i4/WB9cAE6D6II/AAAAAAAAAnY/vnC_rp9Ujh4PuLW4uHQZHqq8hNn-efhqACEw/s320/IMG_7428.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PJRUvNmPCik/WB9b7TbCuGI/AAAAAAAAAnY/qrzBnWkfAYQodAefauZZMiuKZxk94n7ywCEw/s1600/IMG_7429.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PJRUvNmPCik/WB9b7TbCuGI/AAAAAAAAAnY/qrzBnWkfAYQodAefauZZMiuKZxk94n7ywCEw/s320/IMG_7429.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oJ2gYEhiZfo/WB9cKA6pAMI/AAAAAAAAAnY/A-zmxI0poYsp5PoKn3GNBOrwu3USOkjNACEw/s1600/IMG_7437.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oJ2gYEhiZfo/WB9cKA6pAMI/AAAAAAAAAnY/A-zmxI0poYsp5PoKn3GNBOrwu3USOkjNACEw/s320/IMG_7437.JPG" width="256" /></a></div>
We travelled on to Mount Fuji, unfortunately shrouded in mist, to stay at a traditional rayokan inn. We dressed in kimono, slept on futons and had the most exquisite meal in our room. I could have stayed for ever. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UZdoU-Fn7o4/WB9cJfHJovI/AAAAAAAAAnY/IFmP5Fa1utAHk6tQngWU0nkIbWDDkZCNACEw/s1600/IMG_7464.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UZdoU-Fn7o4/WB9cJfHJovI/AAAAAAAAAnY/IFmP5Fa1utAHk6tQngWU0nkIbWDDkZCNACEw/s320/IMG_7464.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next the bullet train to Kyoto, another mix of the ancient and modern, with some of the loveliest temples and old architecture. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xYTralpd3aU/WB9cQGQpCbI/AAAAAAAAAnY/tUGEhITKl9o0IUt6Yx8nAgUFgLL4MMNEACEw/s1600/IMG_7515.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xYTralpd3aU/WB9cQGQpCbI/AAAAAAAAAnY/tUGEhITKl9o0IUt6Yx8nAgUFgLL4MMNEACEw/s320/IMG_7515.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p1iIG5NJ3y4/WB9cNCEeJRI/AAAAAAAAAnY/YDPx-rkw3bEkKHZ4SXMzMO7ttnn6xJ8ZQCEw/s1600/IMG_7513.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p1iIG5NJ3y4/WB9cNCEeJRI/AAAAAAAAAnY/YDPx-rkw3bEkKHZ4SXMzMO7ttnn6xJ8ZQCEw/s320/IMG_7513.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I also found a wonderful fabric shop called Nomura Tailor and my first branch of Tokyu Hands, a totally brilliant lifestyle, arts and crafts store. I poured over all 5 floors, my hubby is very patient, squealing with delight at the diversity of the products. The Japanese have a wonderful appreciation for hand made. The store also have their own café too where I indulged my new passion for anything with green, matcha,tea. Yummy<br />

Reluctantly we left Kyoto, on a bullet train, to Hiroshima. It was somewhere I felt I needed to visit even though I was slightly dreading what I might find. Yes the atomic bomb sites are deeply moving but the city is friendly, lively and just wonderful. A real life affirming experience. Beautiful carp swam in the moat of the castle and this gorgeous butterfly landed close by, I took it as I sign I was meant to be here.<br />
<br />
So what did I bring back from Japan, apart from books and beautiful fabrics, more importantly I had reaffirmed something about myself and my work. I have always been attracted to the preciseness of Japanese art the clean lines, elegance and the sometimes eccentricity. In my work I love to be very neat with definite lines, a feeling of quality but I also like to be quirky. I discovered chirimen fabric, a supple crepe with gorgeous texture and colour , it is used to create kimono braids and decorations. This has already found its way into my work with my new Japanese Monarchs. I am currently creating a new sketchbook and my ideas are brimming over. <br />

I hope you get the sense of how much I love this country, its kind, polite people and its endless sources of artistic inspiration. I cannot wait to return and spend more time in this place where I instantly felt at home. <br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I’ve been putting off writing this for quite a while; I’ve
tidied my sock drawer, alphabetised the cd collection and written my Christmas
cards, okay the last one is untrue but it gives you an idea of how difficult
this is to write.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I have recently taken a step back from stitching and taken a
close look at my ‘business’. You see I even find it problematic to call it
that, but with the help of the wonderful<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Creative Business Network I felt it was time to investigate my earnings
and try and separate my love of creating from the need to pay bills. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bnulkmFd9ik/V7R9kR-PQcI/AAAAAAAAAkU/8VZqeaCIOEwjTXaun7Vls2SDQ9ZHAnbCgCEw/s1600/Heather%2BEveritt%2B1%2Bsmall%2Bwall%2Bhangings%2B300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bnulkmFd9ik/V7R9kR-PQcI/AAAAAAAAAkU/8VZqeaCIOEwjTXaun7Vls2SDQ9ZHAnbCgCEw/s320/Heather%2BEveritt%2B1%2Bsmall%2Bwall%2Bhangings%2B300.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Embroidery is everything to me, the creative process feeds
my soul and without it I feel unfulfilled. But there is something about this
creativity lark that seems to make me want to apologise for trying to make a
living and worse still undervalue what I do. Guiding me through the process of
unpicking costings, Helen at The Creative Business Network was a fresh pair of
eyes who ultimately helped me to work out my bottom line. I had a few shocks
along the way, perhaps the greatest being that I was paying myself about £3 an
hour for some of my pieces. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Why do we find it so difficult to ask for our worth? Why the
lack of confidence in our work? I’m sure not everyone has this but I know a lot
of my creative friends do. This idea that someone will accuse us of not being
worth it, tap us on the shoulder and call us a fake? It’s even got a name
‘imposter syndrome’.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I’ve had a few
incidents that have exposed this raw nerve; once at a craft event when an
incredulous woman asked me three times how much something was and then brought
her family and friends back to my pitch to once again express her astonishment
at the ‘huge ‘price tag. It was a brooch for £20 that took me over 2 hours to
make. I didn’t respond I just stood there and smiled.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NEwZSbvMxd8/V7R9unWLSoI/AAAAAAAAAkU/UnvZ4XmVEg40UeXMlo6TSaePiYjPVA7rQCEw/s1600/Green%2BMorpho%2B300dpi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NEwZSbvMxd8/V7R9unWLSoI/AAAAAAAAAkU/UnvZ4XmVEg40UeXMlo6TSaePiYjPVA7rQCEw/s320/Green%2BMorpho%2B300dpi.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

</div>
<o:p><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
It’s funny isn’t it that those events stay so vivid in the
mind whereas all the lovely things that are said get filed away. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
So what I am trying to say is I am going to adjust my prices
not because I want that holiday in the Maldives or that 3<span style="font-size: x-small;">rd</span> luxury yacht
but because I’m worth it. I trained for 5 years at Art College and university,
I have practised my art and my heart and soul goes into what I do. I am working
on confidence and being able to say I’m proud of my work and I’m good at what I
do. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
I also have incredibly tidy drawers! <o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
The price increase will come into effect on the 1<span style="font-size: x-small;">st</span>

To celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday it was decided to put on an art exhibition inspired by Her Majesty. I'm not really into portraits or landscapes but I suddenly had a brainwave. <br />
It was mainly thanks to Women's' Hour, a regular companion, that I found out about an amazing lady called Maria Merian. She was an entomologist and artist who travelled from her home in Germany to Suriname in 1699, whilst in South America she studied the native plants and animals. She was one of the first scientists to understand the transformation of caterpillar into butterfly. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LGtWhEn7624/V1mFQ5Kc0cI/AAAAAAAAAkA/LhG4BlSY2IgemN5KGF9K5yQgN0-VXvcGQCKgB/s1600/IMG_7103.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LGtWhEn7624/V1mFQ5Kc0cI/AAAAAAAAAkA/LhG4BlSY2IgemN5KGF9K5yQgN0-VXvcGQCKgB/s320/IMG_7103.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Her work was later published in a volume called Metamorphosis Insectorum Suriname. Her original drawings were acquired by George the 3rd and now form part of the Royal Collection. They are currently on display at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace. So there's my Royal connection.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I choose the Blue Morpho, using Maria's drawing as inspiration, the first stage was to draw a simplified pattern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hnNTfRBH_PQ/V1mFPqueg2I/AAAAAAAAAkA/5bxjbErFrgIodzVOUa95HMGtyR5IC0e1wCKgB/s1600/IMG_7104.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hnNTfRBH_PQ/V1mFPqueg2I/AAAAAAAAAkA/5bxjbErFrgIodzVOUa95HMGtyR5IC0e1wCKgB/s320/IMG_7104.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was then cut out in layers of silk and the raw edges bound with satin stitch. I layered black and white silk and cut through the layers to create the markings on the wing edge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OTpWsxDHex4/V1mFR9n_gOI/AAAAAAAAAkE/YmXM1acLfL4ISB6NRsMOFLMYQnUOgAZDgCKgB/s1600/IMG_7105.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OTpWsxDHex4/V1mFR9n_gOI/AAAAAAAAAkE/YmXM1acLfL4ISB6NRsMOFLMYQnUOgAZDgCKgB/s320/IMG_7105.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next the whole butterfly was covered in a layer of shot organza and the veins on the wings were outlined in free motion embroidery. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cV8fXePiB6I/V1mFYxGR5_I/AAAAAAAAAkE/ADG2GYHdVnw39--oLz8MHUlTbb9hhIWGQCKgB/s1600/IMG_7108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cV8fXePiB6I/V1mFYxGR5_I/AAAAAAAAAkE/ADG2GYHdVnw39--oLz8MHUlTbb9hhIWGQCKgB/s320/IMG_7108.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I then cut sections away and stitched in a contrasting colour. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7_NYrkvovV4/V1mFdWZTUGI/AAAAAAAAAkE/K7ut7lTCqtcfKzQPQgBKMI-c_LOIOylvgCKgB/s1600/IMG_7126.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7_NYrkvovV4/V1mFdWZTUGI/AAAAAAAAAkE/K7ut7lTCqtcfKzQPQgBKMI-c_LOIOylvgCKgB/s320/IMG_7126.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I added another layer of organza to achieve real depth in the wings, with lots of free motion embroidery in a variety of coloured threads. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ardCqIMqiZQ/V1mFfTkTQsI/AAAAAAAAAkE/WVBygUugCz0s_ix4EkVCXbmue2ab1i7ygCKgB/s1600/IMG_7139.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ardCqIMqiZQ/V1mFfTkTQsI/AAAAAAAAAkE/WVBygUugCz0s_ix4EkVCXbmue2ab1i7ygCKgB/s320/IMG_7139.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The final stage was hand beading to represent the way light reflects on the iridescent wings. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0zq5V8uVvUI/V1mFfkzkaKI/AAAAAAAAAkE/uP9mZn9F8i0G9O7y5DqeLuLlcASky4izQCKgB/s1600/IMG_7142.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="269" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0zq5V8uVvUI/V1mFfkzkaKI/AAAAAAAAAkE/uP9mZn9F8i0G9O7y5DqeLuLlcASky4izQCKgB/s320/IMG_7142.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here we have the finished piece all ready to show over the weekend. I hope Her Majesty approves! </div>

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TNuTcVbj7VI/Vt1m9H5AWQI/AAAAAAAAAic/2AaF33FKfZM/s1600/Peacock_butterfly_%2528inachis_io%2529_2%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TNuTcVbj7VI/Vt1m9H5AWQI/AAAAAAAAAic/2AaF33FKfZM/s320/Peacock_butterfly_%2528inachis_io%2529_2%255B1%255D.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UY_PXol3Mj0/Vt1nSSrphvI/AAAAAAAAAig/0D0AhxZcZRA/s1600/IMG_0504.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UY_PXol3Mj0/Vt1nSSrphvI/AAAAAAAAAig/0D0AhxZcZRA/s320/IMG_0504.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
All new pieces begin with inspiration, a photograph or a suggestion from a lovely customer. This one began with a determination to create more British butterflies, one of my favourites is the Peacock or Inachis io. <br />
So after initial sketches I make an outline drawing the actual size of the finished piece. This was to be one of my biggest ever, with a wingspan of just over 25cm.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nhQDZZaEStU/Vt1lNQBrcOI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/rjk-qbNHtzo/s1600/image1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
I then break down the main areas of colour and decide on the silks I will use. The areas are then traced and cut out, using Bondaweb I fuse the separate pieces together. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IzKgxjhLrdw/Vt1lQLwBPoI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/zUan_K8nHL4/s1600/IMG_6663.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IzKgxjhLrdw/Vt1lQLwBPoI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/zUan_K8nHL4/s320/IMG_6663.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The next stage is to stitch over all the raw edges with satin stitch, a close zig zag. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nhQDZZaEStU/Vt1lNQBrcOI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/rjk-qbNHtzo/s1600/image1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nhQDZZaEStU/Vt1lNQBrcOI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/rjk-qbNHtzo/s320/image1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Next to add more colour I place over a layer of shot organza, I love this fabric as you can different effects when you move it in the light. Great to suggest the iridescence of butterfly wings.<br />
I stitch in the main vein structures of the wings and enclose areas where I am going to cut out the organza. This is called reverse applique. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a28fPQciVLM/Vt1lVM9vf-I/AAAAAAAAAiQ/Ykncp6VwUAM/s1600/IMG_6677.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a28fPQciVLM/Vt1lVM9vf-I/AAAAAAAAAiQ/Ykncp6VwUAM/s320/IMG_6677.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The darker areas are where the organza remains. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vSWrPZ5155U/Vt1lm5zl3aI/AAAAAAAAAiU/_jwp5pk9__U/s1600/IMG_6678.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vSWrPZ5155U/Vt1lm5zl3aI/AAAAAAAAAiU/_jwp5pk9__U/s320/IMG_6678.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I then start to suggest the subtle qualities of the wing colour with free motion embroidery. This one has three different stages in the stitching. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6inCLqeqKSM/Vt1lsI9vl_I/AAAAAAAAAiU/XsmsJeDrogk/s1600/IMG_6685.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6inCLqeqKSM/Vt1lsI9vl_I/AAAAAAAAAiU/XsmsJeDrogk/s320/IMG_6685.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Finally I start to add micro sequins and beads, these catch the light and shimmer beautifully. I also add hemp sting antennae, these have been painted to suggest a variation in colour. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7Bfvd0It_zE/Vt1lmpud4aI/AAAAAAAAAiU/zncSQXNiZEU/s1600/IMG_6684.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7Bfvd0It_zE/Vt1lmpud4aI/AAAAAAAAAiU/zncSQXNiZEU/s320/IMG_6684.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I then add a ring to the back so he can flutter beautifully up your wall or perch on a picture frame. <br />

Happy New Year everyone.<br />
I love hats and always have, as a little girl I would enjoy dressing up in my Granny's collection. My passion for vintage fashion began at university and I longed to wear a 1920's cloche hat. Unfortunately, I have a huge head, hat size seven and three quarters( I blame my Dad) so these beautiful creations just wouldn't fit me. I collected a variety of styles made from felt, straw and velvet, dating from the 1900's to the 50's and not one would go near my enormous bonce !<br />
The answer came to me with the fashion in the late 80's for soft fabric headgear, I would make my own. I drafted my own patterns and when I had perfected the fit I made them in corduroy, tweed, cotton and linen. As an extra touch many of them had appliqued and embroidered details. <br />
They started out just being for me and then friends asked if they could have one, eventually I ended up making them commercially. Every Saturday I had a stall at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, this was brilliant until the IRA put a stop to proceedings with a terrible bomb that ripped the heart out of the city centre. <br />
So many years have passed, my passion for hats is undiminished, I started making hair adornments featuring my butterfly 'hatchlings' about 4 years ago. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1tbFjE1Pc8M/Vov1MXKlyII/AAAAAAAAAgc/bKQK9b_92GI/s1600/IMG_0293.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1tbFjE1Pc8M/Vov1MXKlyII/AAAAAAAAAgc/bKQK9b_92GI/s320/IMG_0293.JPG" width="320" /></a> A hatchling hair adornment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are still popular for ladies who shy away for a complete hat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A couple of years ago I noticed the work of milliner Karen Geraghty, on Face Book, her business name is Mind Your Bonce. Her hats are so beautiful and combine references to vintage fashion with wonderfully, witty touches. We started conversing and this led to a collaboration on a couple of autumn/winter hats. One featured a tweedy moth and the other a wool Monarch butterfly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/155001051/cocktail-hat-womens-vintage-style-olive?ref=shop_home_active_22">https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/155001051/cocktail-hat-womens-vintage-style-olive?ref=shop_home_active_22</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Later we created two spring/summer hats featuring a dragonfly and a silk butterfly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hWfx0gv2OJ0/Vov1y4R6VNI/AAAAAAAAAg8/b8GlYsdH42Y/s1600/ipad%2Bcontent%2Bsept%2B404.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hWfx0gv2OJ0/Vov1y4R6VNI/AAAAAAAAAg8/b8GlYsdH42Y/s320/ipad%2Bcontent%2Bsept%2B404.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2rG4W2pPxpg/Vov2YpNeLGI/AAAAAAAAAhU/Vbcp-zx4owk/s1600/ipad%2Bcontent%2Bsept%2B409.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2rG4W2pPxpg/Vov2YpNeLGI/AAAAAAAAAhU/Vbcp-zx4owk/s320/ipad%2Bcontent%2Bsept%2B409.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The really lovely thing was meeting Karen and her husband in the queue at last year's Liberty Open Call. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally this December I had a lovely commission to create a cocktail hat for a Christmas wedding. The customer sent me details of her outfit and I knew she had a love of butterflies, so once again with the help of Karen, the Monarch hat was born. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ewh3OEApkDk/Vov1ajApgRI/AAAAAAAAAgs/26Twf98wsP4/s1600/IMG_6259.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ewh3OEApkDk/Vov1ajApgRI/AAAAAAAAAgs/26Twf98wsP4/s320/IMG_6259.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
My passion for hats continues and who knows where it will take me next; the best thing is that the cocktail hat design fits anyone even big heads ! <br />

It's that time of the year; lots of events to prepare for, lugging boxes in and out of unknown premises, wondering if anything will sell. Will my stand be in a corner, next to the loo, in the dark ? It's all those uncertainties that making taking part in any show quite stressful. <br />
However this one will be different, with this one I have support. Not just my lovely long suffering hubby, but two makers who have become very dear friends since I met them at a show over 5 years ago. We hit it off immediately, shared the same sense of humour and had the same worries about exhibiting our work.<br />
Big shows can be very expensive, you don't really have any control about so many things, where you are, foot fall etc. So one day we decided to do it ourselves on a small scale of course but we loved the idea that we could hold the purse strings for advertising, choose the location and get exactly what we expected. <br />
So Solder, Stitch and Turn was born, this was my husband's brainwave. Solder is Karen Adams who makes the most exquisite silver jewellery, Stitch is me and Turn the very talented Sandra Adams who works in wood. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our first venture was an exhibition in Dulverton in Somerset, the space looked beautiful, we laughed and chatted for a whole week, sold work ( always a bonus) gained confidence and made plans for world domination ! </div>

We also shared a venue for Art Trek. North Devon. </div>

A year ago Solder, Stitch & Turn at Christmas was born. We decided to create our own gallery space in an Industrial unit in South Molton, a local market town. Again my husband came to the rescue, he's quite integral to this post, he owns premises which are used for fork lift truck training. It is lovely and light will loads of space. It was a great success, again filled with fun and at one point we had a queue ! </div>

So I think I'd better end this blog and get busy packing my work, I'm so looking forward to the next three days. We have learnt so much about publicity, signage, organisation, finance, cake making ( well not the last one for me). This year we are also demonstrating our making too, if you in the area please pop in and say hello. You are sure to get a very warm, happy welcome ! </div>

Every year I like to create new products in embroidery and a special card to send to friends and family.<br />
The robin is a perennial favourite, there's just something about this cheeky little bird that people love. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O_NwPdXVeWM/VjSuMpfmkHI/AAAAAAAAAew/snPqfIzLdAM/s1600/IMG_3967.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O_NwPdXVeWM/VjSuMpfmkHI/AAAAAAAAAew/snPqfIzLdAM/s320/IMG_3967.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Last year I created a hand embroidered hoop featuring this lovely creature, so this was my starting point for 2015's designs too.<br />
I wanted to create a product with a double function, so the robin linen heart was born.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mVN4r4h3p_c/VjSprxjylbI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/HHfbNidLfh8/s1600/IMG_5677.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mVN4r4h3p_c/VjSprxjylbI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/HHfbNidLfh8/s320/IMG_5677.JPG" width="320" /></a>Frosted holly and red berry holly.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I3GCyEcJx6w/VjSp0p7G8fI/AAAAAAAAAdY/dHeVWzqSkes/s1600/IMG_5687.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I3GCyEcJx6w/VjSp0p7G8fI/AAAAAAAAAdY/dHeVWzqSkes/s320/IMG_5687.JPG" width="320" /></a>Ivy heart.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZJP5IXAqgWk/VjSwEadDAuI/AAAAAAAAAe4/9fR247rWZ3Q/s1600/IMG_5632.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZJP5IXAqgWk/VjSwEadDAuI/AAAAAAAAAe4/9fR247rWZ3Q/s320/IMG_5632.JPG" width="320" /></a>Traditional Holly heart .</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These linen hearts are scented with a gorgeous winter spice oil, so the smell of oranges, cinnamon and spices fills the air. The robin is a detachable brooch made in wool and silk. The heart is pure linen embroidered and beaded. The heart hangs from a yummy velvet ribbon too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PBYLX_s9oxI/VjSrwz62XCI/AAAAAAAAAek/vxjMuqyFeZU/s1600/IMG_5939.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PBYLX_s9oxI/VjSrwz62XCI/AAAAAAAAAek/vxjMuqyFeZU/s320/IMG_5939.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The little robins are also available separately.<br />
I next developed a series of linen tree hearts, these are such fun to make. They have silk applique, embroidery and tiny details of beads. I especially love the tiny faux pearls sewn around the edge. In this range are mistletoe, holly and a robin. They come in a branded envelope, so they make a great gift, easy to post too !!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The same designs are also made in a smaller size as a brooch. These make a subtle festive statement. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I hope you like my new designs, they are being added to my Etsy shop as you read or contact me through Face Book or email. Prices range from £12 to £22 plus postage. <br />
Here's last year's best seller too, I've hatched a new batch as I love them so much ! <br />
